A consortium of Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) bagged a deal to build five Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV) in the next four years. The deal was offered by NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).

NSIL is a separate entity of ISRO, focused to scale up high-technology manufacturing and production base for meeting the needs of the Indian space programme.

After a techno-commercial evaluation, HAL–L&T consortium emerged as a qualified bidder to undertake the whole production of PSLV.

The deal of Rs 860 crore was exchanged between HAL and NSIL at the 7th Bengaluru Space Expo 2022 in Bangalore on Monday.

In past years, PSLV has successfully performed more than 50 successful flights. The launching vehicle has its successful operational status.

In 2019, NSIL invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for the realisation of five PSLV-XL Launch Vehicles by the Indian industry. Based on competitive bidding, HAL led consortium emerged as the successful bidder.

According to the official statement, about 80 per cent of mechanical systems and 60 per cent of electronic systems of PSLV, the third generation launch vehicle of India, come from the industry. However, the remaining percentages in both areas are highly complex.

The consortium will now be responsible for producing, assembling and integrating the launcher by using the existing ISRO facilities under GOCO (Government Owned, Contractor Operated) model.
