India has been in the market for acquiring a long-range air defense system. According to reports, India has decided to acquire 5 regiments of Russian-made S400 Triumf advanced Air Defence Systems and the price has now been finalized.

Currently, India and Russia are working alongside to prevent American sanctions on India under Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for buying Russian weapon's platform. CAATSA has been deployed against Russia by the U.S in August 2017 for probable interference in the 2016 presidential election process.

The defense minister, in a recent press conference emphasized the close defence ties between India and Russia,“In all our engagements with the U.S., we have clearly explained how India and Russia’s defense cooperation has been going on for a long time and that it is a time-tested relationship, we have mentioned that CAATSA cannot impact the India-Russia defense cooperation."

The Indian defense minister is expected to raise the issue of sanctions under CAATSA, which could kick in on any Indo-Russian defense procurement deal above $15 million, at the upcoming 2+3 talks between the Indian and U.S. defense and foreign ministers scheduled for the month of September this year.
