Indian Air Force To Buy Anti-Radar Missile NGARM At Rs 1400 Cr

NGARM is India's first indigenously developed anti-radiation missile, capable of travelling at Mach two, or twice the speed of sound

The Indian Air Force has submitted a proposal to the government worth over Rs 1,400 crore for the acquisition of Rudram's next-generation anti-radiation missiles (NGARM) to search and destroy enemy radar locations, according to defence officials quoted by a media report.

“A proposal for the acquisition of advanced missiles developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is with the Defence Ministry, and a high-level meeting will take a decision on it soon,” defence officials said.

The Indian Air Force has already tested next-generation anti-radiation missiles from its Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft fleet and they can destroy enemy radar locations during conflicts, they claim.

The destruction of radar systems could allow the Indian Air Force to strike targets without being detected, according to officials.

The NGARM can be launched from IAF fighters such as the Sukhoi-30 and Mirage-2000. It is accurate and has been designed to track a radar system even when it is not operational.

NGARM is India's first indigenously developed anti-radiation missile, capable of travelling at Mach two, or twice the speed of sound.

The tactical air-to-surface anti-radiation missile is outfitted with a passive homing head that detects radiation sources of varying frequencies. It can lock onto a target not only before launch but also afterwards.

The induction of the NGARM would be a significant boost for the Indian Air Force as it would assist the force in preparing for future wars with indigenous weapon systems.

Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari recently said that the Indian Air Force would focus on inducting made-in-India weapons based on lessons learned from the Ukraine-Russia war.
