Army Tweaks Agnipath Scheme To Recruit Skilled Candidates For Technical Roles

The development comes after the Army changed the selection process for 'Agniveers,' requiring aspirants to take an online common entrance examination, followed by physical fitness and medical tests and the first online CEE is set to take place in April at nearly 200 different locations across the country

The Indian Army has modified the Agnipath scheme to include pre-skilled youth and ITI and Polytechnic graduates in the technical category in order to broaden the eligibility criteria for Agniveers.

According to media reports, the changes are being implemented to reduce the amount of time spent on individual training.

According to the Army, the changes will likely make the scheme more accessible to more candidates.

The development comes after the Army changed the selection process for 'Agniveers,' requiring aspirants to take an online common entrance examination, followed by physical fitness and medical tests. The first online CEE is set to take place in April at nearly 200 different locations across the country.

The three services are recruiting youths between the ages of 17-and-a-half and 21 under the Agnipath scheme, which was announced on 14 June last year, for four years with the option of retaining 25 per cent of them for another 15 years.

For 2022, the upper age limit has been extended to 23 years.

Several parts of India have seen violent protests against the scheme, with agitators demanding that it be scrapped because the new model does not guarantee a job to 75 per cent of recruits. However, the protests were short-lived.

The government has also announced the 'Seva Nidhi Package,' under which 'Agniveers' will receive Rs 11.71 lakh after four years. According to the statement, the amount will be exempt from income tax.
