India Can Be 'Super Manufacturer' Of Military Equipment, Says CDS Gen Chauhan

The private sector’s participation in the defence field was lauded by manufacturing, chief of defence staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan said on Tuesday. The CDS claimed India’s potential to emerge as a super manufacturer of military equipment.
Gen Chauhan said that the nation has already displayed the wherewithal to develop big and complex manufacturing platforms.
The chief of defence staff was addressing the inauguration ceremony of the MSMEs Defence Expo 2023 and mentioned the Hindustan Aeronautics, India’s largest chopper manufacturing unit in Karnataka as the country’s post-independence dream to become self-reliant in defence manufacturing.
The CDS further highlighted, ordnance factories and defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs), played a major role in living the dream.
He said, while imagining the country as powerful, our major focus should be the Armed Forces and we should proudly acknowledge their achievements.
A big defence ecosystem supports the armed forces making the country powerful in tandem with the military, navy and air force, general Chauhan added.
He stressed the fact that the people in this ecosystem do not wear uniforms and do not come under the armed forces' acts but have a strong desire that inspires them to do something for the nation.
He emphasised the country will rise powerfully if most of the silent contribution is recognised, and I am here to recognise and acknowledge such great support.
A need for a "whole-of-nation approach, instead of the whole-of-government approach", is a must in defence manufacturing, Chauhan stated.
He urged all stakeholders like the Armed Forces, DPSUs, DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), private industries, MSMEs and individual innovators to work together for the same.
