The Indian Army got exclusive Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to the new Camouflage Pattern and Improved Combat Uniform Design on Thursday. The Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks finished the registration process to demonstrate Indian Army ownership.

The Indian Army's new Digital Pattern Combat Uniform was presented on Army Day this year. The new uniform features a more modern functional design. The fabric is lighter, stronger, breathable, fast drying and easy to care for. The addition of gender-specific adaptations for women's battle uniforms emphasises the uniform's individuality.

“The exclusive Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of the Design and Camouflage Pattern now lie completely with the Indian Army and consequently production by any vendor who is not authorised will be illegal and subject to legal ramifications,” the Ministry of Defence in a statement said on Thursday.

The Indian Army can enforce exclusive rights to the design by filing infringement cases in a competent court of law. Infringement remedies include interim and permanent injunctions, as well as monetary damages.

A total of 50,000 sets have already been procured through Canteen Stores Department (CSD) and delivered to 15 CSD Depots as part of the process of introducing the new pattern uniform. 15 CSD spots include Delhi, Leh, BD Bari, Srinagar, Udhampur, Andaman & Nicobar, Jabalpur, Masimpur, Narangi, Dimapur, Bagdogra, Lucknow, Ambala, Mumbai and Khadki.

Workshops to train civil and military tailors in stitching the new uniform to the required design are being organised in collaboration with instructors from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi, according to officials.

Bulk procurement of 11.70 lakh sets for the issue to JCOs and ORs as part of the individual kit (Life Cycle Concept with a life of 15 months) is currently underway and is expected to begin in August 2023.
