Pakistan, Polish Entities Ink MoU For Supply Of Defence Equipment To Ukraine

Poland is moving beyond simply being a transit state for the transfer of Pakistani arms to Ukraine with a Polish entity signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Pakistani company to supply defence equipment to Kyiv. Other Pakistani and Polish companies are also involved in the equipment transfer, with a Canadian firm acting as an intermediary.

DMI Associates, an agent for Pakistan Ordnance Factories based in Islamabad, has signed an MoU with the Government Strategic Reserves Agency of Poland, according to the media report. It has also been learned that the Polish firm PHU Lechmar LLC will act as an intermediary purchaser, and Tradent Global Solutions, based in Canada, will act as an intermediary consultant.

According to the report, Pakistan is in the process of exporting Anza Mark-II Man Portable Air Defence Systems to Poland for transport to Ukraine.

Millennium Technologies of Karachi and Omida Sea and Air of Poland are negotiating the transportation agreement.

Last week, Pakistan was transferring rockets to Kyiv for use in multi-barrel rocket launchers via a German port. According to people familiar with Ukraine-Pakistan relations, over 10,000 rockets have been shipped.

Reportedly, it also sent another shipment of 50,000 defence stores via Karachi. The Pakistan shipments are reportedly routed through Poland's Gdansk Port to Ukraine.

In exchange, Ukraine promised to help Pakistan upgrade its Mi-17 helicopters. A Ukrainian company that makes aircraft engines and industrial marine gas turbines are allegedly assisting Pakistan in upgrading its helicopters.

Last year, Pakistan played a critical role in the transfer of arms to Ukraine on behalf of the United Kingdom.

Ukraine-Pakistan Military And Economic Ties

Pakistan had purchased over 320 Ukrainian T-80UD tanks in service, complete with a fully developed ecosystem for their maintenance, use, ammunition and spare parts. Between 1991 and 2020, Ukraine signed nearly USD 1.6 billion in arms contracts with Pakistan. According to reports, Islamabad has reached an agreement with Kyiv to repair its T-80UD fleet for USD 85.6 million.

Pakistan and Ukraine agreed in 2021 to strengthen military ties, particularly in the areas of defence production, training, counter-terrorism operations and intelligence.
